I'd like to welcome all children, parents and extended family to Room 11 for 2016.  I've spent the week with a class and it has been great so far.

Library Times

The school library is an important part of our Literacy program.  Room 11 are scheduled to use the school library on Friday from 11:00 to 11:45.  If any parents are available to help us out during our sessions, we would certainly appreciate it.  Please ensure that your child has a book bag on Fridays so that they can issue books freely.  Books can also be issued in advance at http://dice.redwood.school.nz:2001/#!dashboard, and childen will be provided with an access number shortly.

Healthy snacks

During the day, we may take a break from working hard.  When this happens, Room 11 are allowed to eat a healthy snack (brain food).  Healthy snacks allowed during class time will be fruit, vegetable, nuts, or any other unprocessed food.  It may be a good idea to cut large items into smaller pieces.

Lunch orders

Lunch orders can now be ordered online on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of each week through www.lunchonline.co.nz or www.nzkidsfood.co.nz.  Providers are Subway on Monday, Chai Sushi or NZ Kids Food on Wednesday and Nada Bakery on Thursday and Friday.  You will need an online account for both.  Please make sure that your child's class details are updated.  For further information see http://www.redwood.school.nz/lunch-orders-1.

Water bottles

Room 11 are able to sip from water bottles on their desks.  They should ensure that the bottle contains only water and it is clearly labelled.

Class Blog

The Room 11 class blog is up and running, and I hope to keep it updated regularly, at least once a month.  On the blog you can find a calendar with upcoming events for Room 11, access to Reading Eggs, Mathletics and Spelling City online resources, access to the school library database, where library books can be found, reserved and reviewed, story starters to use as writing prompts at home and National Standard information for Year 4.

Important information about Room 11 will also be posted on the blog.

The blog can be accessed through the website, http://www.redwood.school.nz/blogs-1/class-blogs or directly at http://www.redwoodschoolmichaelheyes.blogspot.co.nz/.

If you wish, you can enter in your email address to automatically be notified whenever there are updates.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Citizenship

Passwords for Reading Eggs, Mathletics and Google accounts will be given out to students.  I will give them a copy for home and for school.  Each student will be responsible for remembering their their password and keeping it safe.  Passwords should not be given to anyone else.

This week, a contract of Digital Citizenship (safe and responsible use of ICT) will be issued to children for them and their parents to agree to and sign.  This contract will last for the rest of their time at Redwood School.  The contracts must be agreed to before a student can use devices at school.

For more information about ICT and Digital Citizenship at Redwood School, see http://www.redwood.school.nz/digital-citizenship.

School Website

The school website is a good first port of call for finding information about Redwood School.  You can access it at www.redwood.school.nz.  If you have suggestions for any improvements, please let me know.  Lunch ordering information, class blogs and resources for home learning can also be found here.

Stationery

I apologise for any mixups that may have occurred with ordering stationery online.  Room 11 have agreed to give me any of their spare stationery that they don't want to be responsible for looking after throughout the year.  For those who do want the responsibility of looking after their stationery, I fully recommend the use of a pencil case.

Items such as pens, pencils and glue sticks can be easily lost throughout the year.  If your child runs out of some of the daily essentials I will let you know by email.

Email addresses and communication

For most communication, it would be convenient to use email as it can be read whenever possible.  I will use the email addresses for you that we have in our database at school.  If you wanted information sent to a different address, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will contact you by telephone if I need to.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I am happy to help.

Regards,

Michael Heyes
